If you want something done right, do it yourself. That’s the mindset of many entrepreneurs – at least in the beginning. After all, if you’ve built a successful company, chances are you don’t want anyone messing with it.
However, if you want to keep growing your business to new levels of success, you can’t keep doing everything yourself. Delegating allows you to focus your time and energy on the big-picture aspects of your organization – like vision, values and leadership. It also allows people on your team to learn new skills, have new experiences, and better understand where you’re taking the company – making them even more valuable to your organization.
The logic is indisputable, yet many entrepreneurs limit their success by refusing to delegate. If you’re having trouble letting go, here are a few tips to help you ease into it:
1. Learn to trust. By far, the most important ingredient for successful delegation is trust. And by that, I mean trusting yourself. Trust that you will delegate to the right person. (Remember, the “right person” is one who shares your organization’s core values – someone who gets it, wants it, and has the capacity to do the job.) Trust that you will make the right choices and quickly adjust when necessary.
2. Consider your strengths and weaknesses. Start by delegating the things you aren’t good at doing. The idea that you need to be good at everything is a fallacy that died a long time ago. We all have our own strengths and skills, and that’s why teamwork is so important.
3. Offload what you don’t enjoy. You can even take it a step further and delegate things you’re good at but don’t like doing. Talent is important, but so is passion. Someone who is both capable of doing the work and who enjoys doing it will usually do a better job.
Ready to start delegating so that your business can grow and flourish? If so, you’ll be happier … and so will your employees and investors!
